Thorough cleaning by a dentist or hygienist will remove most external staining caused by food and smoking. Stains within the tooth itself can be professionally whitened.
Whitening (bleaching) can be done either in a dentist’s office or at home. It is safe and generally effective. It involves wearing a very light, transparent plastic tray that your dentist moulds to your teeth. The tray holds a bleaching agent, usually hydrogen peroxide. The process takes 10 days to two weeks. Your dentist will guide you. The process is a little more effective with younger people. It is a good idea to check with your dentist before beginning any whitening procedure.

There are some disadvantages to whitening. All teeth may not bleach evenly; it may be necessary to replace some white fillings after treatment as they no longer match the colour of the teeth; bleaching may not be suitable if you have sensitive or worn teeth or gum disease; the hydrogen peroxide may cause short-term gum irritation.
